THE THIRD SERIES
OF PHOTOGRAPHS BY FINE TAXIDERMISTS
SINKE & VAN TONGEREN

After observing and analysing so many 17th-century paintings, we were inspired to create a new series of work focused on still life masterpieces. We chose photography as the medium to portray our work interpreted through vanitas still lifes.

Our collection, ‘Les Peintures des Taxidermistes’, comprises eight works featuring an even larger amount of tailor-made Fine Taxidermy works than previous editions.

JE ME VAIS SACRIFIER

An old parchment-covered book is the solid base under a nest made from blood coral segments. In the nest we find a large variety of fragile eggs in different colors, patterns and size. A governess Bee-eater is committed to take care of this progeny from many other birds. The pale pink, ruffled clamshells are a reference to the divine. This scene is a symbol of altruism.

Vanitas still lifes were enormously popular in the 17th century, often inspired by biblical themes and the saying that “All is vanity”. It reminded the viewer of his or her own mortality. For these series of still lifes we not only created meaningful scenes of taxidermy, we also mined our enormous collection of great finds to gather the most beautiful and unusual antiques to complement each scene.

LA VIE PERDU

The head of an enormous black Marlin is the centerpiece of this Bacchanalian composition of fresh fruits and vegetables. The honourless ending of the mighty predator is also symbolized by the cut off bronze claw of an eagle in the right bottom corner. Meanwhile the smaller prey seem to celebrate a false victory.

CHARLES MONDRIAAN

In this still life we made a stricter composition in honor of Dutch painter, Pieter Mondriaan. The anatomical arm in the picture came from the Royal Academy of Arts and was used in class during the time Mondriaan attended. For us, this composition is an interaction of Charles Darwin’s world of Natural History and Mondriaans’ world of Fine Art. All elements in this still life play both parts.

ÊTRE LA CURIOSITÉ

A black marble base on white marble claws is the base for an antique book of knowledge. It is an invitation to gather wisdom. However, the chipmunk is more curious for food, while the squirrel seems intrigued by death. The nest with two eggs and the pomegranate fruit symbolize a curiosity for life and sex. Sex, life and death - a classical Vanitas.

LA SURVIE DU PLUS FORT

Rich textiles are pulled back to reveal a Dutch antique bible that is almost hidden under the powerful presence of the Nile Crocodile skull under an American Alligator skull under an Asian Gharial skull. On top of this – as subtle as the Bible below – sits an adorned Marmoset skull.  This is Darwinism and Christianity fighting for the final say. Are these beautiful crocodiles a display of God’s great work or are these evolutional steps stacked on a pile?

RÉUNION D’OISEAUX ÉTRANGERS

Cabinets of curiosity were of monumental importance in the 16th-, 17th- and 18th-centuries. Assembling them with interesting and rare objects was a competitive hobby amongst the elite, and to collect a great number of mounted species from everywhere in the world was the Holy Grail of the day. For ‘Réunion d’oiseaux étrangers’, we created that Holy Grail again, but this time stocking our cabinet with seemingly live species. This plentiful composition is staged in a cabinet with different boxes holding rare species such as a Toco Toucan, Scarlet ibis, Cock of the Rock, Aracari, Turaco, various parrots and many others birds and natural history items. It is a true symbol of wealth, but also a symbol of the richness of nature.

TROMPE-L'OWL

Over the years we have seen so many intriguing painted optical illusions. With this antique, gilded, three-dimensional window frame, we take you to an ancient castle where the trophy of the hunt is being displayed. Of course a Great Grey Owl would be an unusual catch, but we love the colors, shape and beautiful patterns. Although it is most certainly dead, it still seems to frighten the white hedgehog in front.

RENDEZ-VOUS EXOTIQUE

A fine composition of an agile and bright Harlequin Macaw with a Carmine bee-eater. They gather around a Sicilian ‘Teste di Moro’ and ripened, exotic fruits. All are situated on a Kermes red base. This scene breathes abundance, while the measuring tape is a witty reminder for us to self-restrain.
